The Journey

Last night Rev Richard Farmer gave the word at Wednesday night service.  He called it the Journey from How to Who coming from John 9. The whole sermon was a blessing, but the ending spoke to me.

His illustration was on a young man who spent his time mastering the English language. He worked very hard at achieving excellence in his speech.  So at a contest, he delivered the Psalm 23.  The young man did an excellent job. He was quite sure that he would win, because he could see the troubles the people who came after him had.  At one point, an old man got up and also did Psalm 23.

The young man critiqued the older man’s delivery of the psalm in his mind. The older man’s cadence was off, he mispronounce some words, the list of errors went on. Yet at the end of the old man’s speech, the audience stood and applauded.

Finally at the end of the contest, the judges gave the award to the old man.

The young man was outraged. He could not believe it. He approached one of the judges afterwards and asked how this happened. The judge agreed that the young man had done a fine job with the psalm.  He told the young man, “You KNOW the psalm.”  The judge went on to say  but, the older man KNOWS the shepherd.

And that my friends, makes all the difference in the world.
